Many tablets under 5000 rupees provide good features and quality. Though the experience may not be as good as high-end tablets, they make an ideal first tablet for children. Here is the Pro-Con analysis and comparison of tablets that are under 5000 rupees and offer good features.

This post is a Pro-Con analysis and comparison of the below tablets under Rs.5000

  1. Lenovo Tab 3 Essential (7 inch, 8GB, WiFi Only)
  2. Swipe W74 Eco (7 inch, 8GB, WiFi+3G)
  3. Micromax Canvas Tab P70221 (7 inch, 16GB, WiFi+3G)
  4. Micromax Canvas Tab P290 (7 inch, 8GB, WiFi only)
  5. iBall Slide 6351 Q40i (7 inch, 8GB, WiFi Only)

Pro-Con Analysis and Comparison

I)Lenovo Tab 3 Essential (7 inch, 8GB, WiFi Only)

lenovo tab 3 essential
Approx. Selling Price: Rs.5,000.00

Note: 'Lenovo Tab 3 Essential' is different from 'Lenovo Tab 3 7 Essential' which is priced above Rs.5000. It is easy to get confused since both the models have similar names.

Pros:

  • Android Lollipop (5.x) operating sytem. Most other tablets in this price range have Kitkat (4.x) operating system. Note: Some shopping sites have mentioned that this tablet is upgradeable to Marshmallow (6.x). But as of writing, there are no reports of updates. The official specs from Lenovo also do not mention Marshmallow upgrade. So, I do not suggest counting on the update.
  • Expandable storage upto 64 GB using a micro SD card. Other tablets in this range offer only upto 32 GB.
  • Battery capacity is 3450mAh, while other tablets in this range mostly have a capacity under 3000mAh.
  • While display resolution of 1024x600 is just on par with other tablets, the Tab 3 Essential has In-Plane Switching (IPS) for better viewing angles.
  • Dolby Audio enhancement. No other tablet in this price range has this.

Cons:

  • No SIM card slot for voice calling. Tablets like Micromax Canvas Tab P70221 and Swipe W74 Eco have dual sim card slots and are priced under Rs.5000.
  • No WhatsApp, because there is no SIM slot. You can use the link mentioned in the common features section on this page for a work around to using WhatsApp on tablets without SIM card slot.
  • WiFi only. No mobile data (2G/3G) since there is no SIM slot.

OK:

  • 7 inch Display size with 1024x600 pixel resolution
  • 8GB internal storage (less than 4GB usable), 1.3 Ghz Quad core processor
  • No camera flash, No HDMI. But these are features that you would generally not find in tablets in this range.
  • 2MP rear camera and 0.3MP front camera.
  • Bluetooth, G-Sensor GPS, WiFi, USB

Though it is priced higher than other tablets in this range, it has higher battery capacity, expandable storage and Lollipop. It could have done better with a faster processor, but is still the best of the tablets that you currently get in this price range. This is the tablet that I recommend the most in this price range.

II)Swipe W74 Eco (7 inch, 8GB, WiFi+3G)

Swipe W74 Eco
Approx. Selling Price: Rs.4,000.00

Pros:

  • Dual SIM: Unlike most other tablets in this price, this tablet is not only a voice calling tablet but actually a dual sim tablet.
  • Rear camera has flash. Few other tablets in this price range have camera flash.
  • Mobile data (2G/3G): You can connect to 2G/3G mobile data using a SIM card.
  • WhatsApp: SIM card slot means that you can install and verify WhatsApp normally like you would use on a phone.

I wish this tab had a slighly better camera (since it also has flash) and a better display resolution (not that it is bad). But it is still a winner with a price under Rs.4000.

Cons:
I don't see any cons for this tablet. The specs are on par with other tablets in this price range.

OK:

  • 7 inch display size with 1024x600 resolution.
  • Android kitkat
  • 1.3GHz quad core processor with 1GB RAM.
  • 8GB internal storage (approx 4gb usable), upto 32GB expandable storage.
  • WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, USB
  • 2MP rear camera (with flash) and 0.3MP front camera
  • 3000 mAh battery
  • There is no HDMI port. But that is OK.

III)Micromax Canvas Tab P70221 (7 inch, 16GB, WiFi+3G)

Micromax Canvas Tab P70221
Approx. Selling Price: Rs.3,700.00

Pros:

  • Dual SIM: This is a voice calling tablet like the Swipe W74 Eco.
  • WhatsApp: You can use WhatsApp since it has a sim card slot.
  • Mobile data (2G/3G): You can connect to 2G/3G mobile data using a SIM card.
  • Internal storage: 16GB internal storage. Other tablets in this price range offer just 8GB.
  • Battery: 3200 mAh. Though not as good as the Lenovo Tab 3 Essential(3450 mAh) , 3200 mAh is pretty good for this price range.
  • Camera flash: Yes, for rear camera.
  • 2MP front camera. Other tablets in this price range have a 0.3MP front camera.

Cons:
With respect to the specifications, the only Con that I see is 1.3GHz dual core processor. Other tablets have quad core processors.

But the tablet does seem to have some performance issues. Two of the most common complaints are:

  • Battery drains quickly.
  • Tablet heats up fast.

OK:

  • 7 inch display size with 1024x600 resolution.
  • Android kitkat operating system
  • 1GB RAM.
  • Upto 32GB expandable storage.
  • WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, USB
  • 2MP rear camera with flash.
  • No HDMI port.

IV)Micromax Canvas Tab P290 (7 inch, 8GB, WiFi only)

Micromax Canvas Tab P290
Approx. Selling Price: Rs.3500.00

Pros:
Android Lollipop operating sytem.

Cons:

  • No SIM card slot for voice calling. So no WhatsApp and mobile data (2G/3G).
  • Battery: 2820 mAh. One would expect atleast a 3000mAh battery in any tablet.

Performance issues commonly reported:

  • Slow charging.
  • Fast battery drainage.
  • Slow touch response.

OK:

  • 7 inch display size with 1024x600 resolution.
  • 1.3GHz quad core processor with 1GB RAM.
  • 8GB internal storage (approx 4gb usable), upto 32GB expandable storage.
  • WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, USB
  • 2MP rear camera and 0.3MP front camera
  • No HDMI port.

V)iBall Slide 6351 Q40i (7 inch, 8GB, WiFi Only)

iBall Slide 6351 Q40i
Approx. Selling Price: Rs.3,500.00

Pros:

  • Rear camera flash

Cons:

  • 512MB RAM. All other tablets have 1GB RAM
  • 2500mAh battery. That's the lowest amongst all the tablets that I have listed here.
  • No SIM card slot for voice calling. No WhatsApp or mobile data.
  • No GPS

OK:

  • 7 inch display, 1024x600 pixel resolution
  • Android kitkat operating system
  • 1.3GHz quad core processor with 1GB RAM.
  • 8GB internal storage with expandable storage upto 32GB.
  • USB, WiFi, Bluetooth
  • 2MP rear camera (with flash), 0.3MP front camera.
  • No HDMI port.

Features commonly found/missing in this price range:

  1. SIM slot: There are very few voice calling tablets under Rs.5000. Most of them do not have SIM slot. Some tablets with sim card slot are listed in this post.
  2. WhatsApp: WhatsApp requires a device to have SIM card for phone verification. Most tablets under Rs. 5000 do not have SIM card. But you can use 'WhatsApp's web app' on your Tablet if you already have a verified WhatsApp on another device like your phone. You can learn more about it here.
  3. Internet connectivity: All of them allow WiFi connectivity. Only a few tablets with SIM slot support mobile data( 2G/3G). In tablets that do not have sim slot, you can use 3G via dongle. No tablet in this list supports 4G.
  4. Display: Most of them are 7 inch tablets with 1024x600 pixel resolution.
  5. Operating system: Either Kitkat (Android 4.x) or Lollipop (Android 5.x) operating systems.
  6. Processor, RAM & Storage: Most of them have 1.3 Ghz quad core processors and 1GB RAM. Even though the internal storage is mostly 8GB, you will have only around 4gb for actual usage. The other 4 GB goes into operating system and preloaded apps. Most of them allow expandable storage upto 32GB with a micro SD card.
  7. GPS: Almost all support GPS.
  8. Magnetic sensors: Don't expect magnetic sensors. You need magnetic sensors for directions with maps.
  9. Camera: Most tablets have 2MP rear cameras and 0.3MP front cameras. Some of them have camera flash for their rear cameras.
  10. HDMI: None of them support HDMI.
  11. Bluetooth: All of them support bluetooth.
  12. USB: All of them have micro USB ports
