How To Create And View Hidden Files Or Folders In Android?

'Hidden files' are files that exist on your Android but are not visible while exploring with a file manager. Hiding files prevents them from being accidentally deleted.

I: Create hidden files or folders

It is easy to create a hidden file/folder. Just add a dot (.) before the file/folder name.
Examples: .salesreport, .importantlinks

Notice that the hidden files/folders are lighter colored than the others. If you are unable to see them at all, then you should enable viewing of hidden files.

Note: Using hidden files/folders to hide information from prying eyes may not be a good idea. It is easy to enable viewing of hidden files. The main purpose of hidden files is to prevent them from being accidentally deleted.


II.1: Enable/Disable viewing hidden files/folders using ES File Explorer

Before you begin, create some hidden files/folders.

  • Open ES File Explorer
  • Tap the hamburger icon to open the sliding menu
  • Go to Settings>>Display Settings
  • Check/Uncheck the option 'Show hidden files'


II.2: Enable/Disable viewing hidden files/folders using Astro File Manager

Before you begin, create some hidden files/folders.

  • Open Astro File Manager
  • Tap the 3 dot menu on top right
  • Tap 'View Settings'
  • Tap 'Advanced' tab
  • Check/Uncheck 'Show hidden files'


II.3: Enable/Disable viewing hidden files/folders using Asus File Manager

Before you begin, create some hidden files/folders.

  • Open the File Manager
  • Asus File Manager Hidden Cabinet

  • Scroll to the bottom of the app's home screen and tap 'Hidden cabinet'
  • Enter a new PIN number and confirm it. Memorize this PIN. You will need it to access the hidden cabinet.
  • Now go back to the app's home screen and browse to a file/folder that needs to be hidden.
  • Select a file/folder by long pressing it. To select more files/folders, tap them.
  • Tap the 3 dot menu and select 'Move to hidden cabinet'. The selected files/folders will be moved to hidden cabinet.
  • Now go back to the app's home screen and open the hidden cabinet using the PIN number.

To remove a file from the hidden cabinet: Open the hidden cabinet and select the file to be removed. Tap the 3 dot menu and select 'Move to'. You can move it to any location on your device.

Before you begin, create some hidden files/folders.

  • Open File Commander
  • Tap the hamburger icon to open the sliding menu
  • Tap 'Settings'
  • Check/Uncheck 'Show hidden files and folders'


II.5: Enable/Disable viewing hidden files/folders using Cheetah Mobile's File Manager

Before you begin, create some hidden files/folders.

  • Open File Manager
  • Tap the hamburger icon to open the sliding menu
  • Tap 'Settings'
  • Check/Uncheck 'Show Hidden Files'
