How To Add Whatsapp Photo, Video Or GIF Status Update?

A Feb 2017 update to WhatsApp allows you to add photos, videos and gifs as 'Status'. The old text based status is now discontinued. 'Status' is a real time indication of what you are doing to keep your contacts up to date.

Status Privacy: Choose who can see your status


When you add a status, a notification will be sent to only those contacts that you choose in the 'status privacy'
WhatsApp Privacy

  • Open WhatsApp and tap menu tab 'Status'
  • Open the 3 dot menu on top right
  • Tap 'Status Privacy'
  • WhatsApp Privacy Options

  • Now you will have 3 options to choose from:
    1. My contacts: All your contacts will see your status.
    2. My contacts except: You can choose which contacts will not see your status. All others will see your status.
    3. Only share with: Choose contacts who can see your status. Others will not see your status.

Note: Those who are not in your contact list will not see your status. However, it does not stop them from seeing your profile picture or messaging you.


Add Status Update (Method 1): Shoot a status update from WhatsApp's camera

  • Open WhatsApp and tap 'Status'
  • Tap 'My Status'. This opens the WhatsApp camera.
  • Click a photo, write a caption and send. Tap 'Send' when asked for confirmation. A notification will be sent to contacts that you have allowed in your status privacy.

Note: Status updates expire after 24 hours.


Add Status Update (Method 2): Select an existing photo, video or gif from your storage and add as your status

  • Open the folder that contains the photo, video or gif
  • Select a file by long pressing it
    WhatsApp Status from storage
  • Now tap 'Share' in your file manager. In some file managers, this option may be named as 'Send'
  • Select 'WhatsApp' from the options shown
  • Select 'My Status'. Tap the tick mark at the bottom right to confirm. The selected file will be uploaded as your status and a notification will be sent to your contacts.

Note: Status updates expire after 24 hours.


Delete Status Update: Delete an update before it expires.

  • Tap the 'Status' menu tab in WhatsApp
  • WhatsApp Status Delete

  • Tap the 3 horizontal dots to the right of 'My Status'. This will show the status updates that you have added.
  • To select a status update, long press it.
  • Now tap the 'trash' icon to delete the selected update. Deleting an update also deletes it for everyone who received it.
