Micromax, an Indian maker of budget smart phones has entered the Tablet PC market. The new Tablet PC branded as ‘Funbook’ is positioned as an Edutainment (Education and Entertainment) Tablet. The Funbook Tablet runs on Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) operating system.

Just a day before this launch, HCL has unveiled 3 Tablet PCs on the ICS o/s. Two of them have been positioned as Education tablets targeting the college going students. The Micromax Funbook tablet is priced lower than the HCL Edu Tabs and Micromax’s market share in the student market has been much better due to its affordable mobile phones.

HCL MyEdu Tab K12 (Kindergarten to Class 12) is priced at Rs.11, 499 and HCL MyEdu Tab Higher Education (HE) is priced at Rs. 9,999. My Edu Tab K12 comes with pre-installed educational apps and NCERT content.

Micromax Funbook priced at Rs. 6499/- seems to target a much wider student base covering primary school students, students of under-graduate courses and also provides sample papers for Engineering, Medical and MBA examinations.

Right now, it looks like Micromax will do better in this market mainly due to its penetration and affordability. What do you think?
