Android Privacy and Security 4: Pattern, Pin and Password Screenlocks

Change your Android screenlock from the default 'swipe to unlock' to a more secure unlock option. The other unlock options that Android offers are 'Pattern', 'Pin' and 'Password'.

To switch to Pattern Screenlock:

  • Go to settings>>security>>screenlock
  • Tap 'Pattern'
  • Record a pattern. To record, draw a pattern on the screen connecting atleast 4 dots. Remember the pattern that you have drawn.
  • Tap 'Continue' and draw again to confirm.
  • Tap Confirm.
  • Your screenlock changes to 'pattern'.
  • Test screenlock: You can test by locking and unlocking the screen. . On most Android phones, you can lock the screen by briefly pressing the power button.

    To switch to PIN screenlock:

    • Go to settings>>security>>screenlock
    • Tap PIN
    • Enter a PIN number and confirm it in the next screen. Remember the pin that you have set.
    • This changes you screenlock to PIN. Test your screenlock to make sure the changes are done.

    To switch to password screenlock:

    • Go to settings>>security>>screenlock
    • Tap 'password'.
    • Enter a password and confirm it in the next screen. Remember the password that you have set.
    • This changes your screenlock to 'password'. Test your screenlock to make sure the changes are done.
